Photo Christmas Cards

Wow, I can't believe it's already time to start thinking about family Christmas cards for 2009... I try to take new photos of the kids around this time of year (trying to plan ahead) to include on our family Christmas cards.  If I take the photos in November, then I have time to upload them to a website, like Walmart.com, Shutterfly.com or Vistaprint.com and order custom cards before my self-imposed Christmas card mailing deadline.  To add color to the shots, this year I bought scarves and hats at Target.

I decided to use Walmart.com for the printing of the cards because this site offered a custom card that let me include more than the standard 2 or 3 photos.  The front of the card is above... click the "read more" link to see the back of the card, pricing info and tips on photographing your kids.

And here's the back of the card...

Price, Layout and Shipping

The cards were $1.42 each and when I purchased them online, I could indicate that I wanted them either mailed to my home address (with a small shipping fee) or sent to a Walmart store (of my choosing; no shipping fee) to be picked up.  I decided to have them sent to the Walmart store closest to my home for pickup.
The layout of this card allowed me to use four photos on the front, one on the back and three on the inside.  I also typed a one page custom Christmas greeting (family update news) on the inside of the card.  The card was basically, fully customizable.

To create and order this style of card, go to the the Photo Department of the Walmart.com website and click on "Cards"... select "Collage Cards".  From there you can tweak the selections to fit your needs for varying photo layouts.

Photo-taking Tips

If you're planning on taking photos of the kids and you know you'll need several shots for a card like this... plan ahead....
  • Have everything ready before you get the kids in front of the camera
  • Scout out the best place to take the photos beforehand
  • Have any clothing accessories you want them to wear ready (colorful hats, scarves, etc.)
  • Have your tripod out and ready
  • Check the batteries in your digital camera to make sure they are fresh
  • Give yourself plenty of time because you're gonna need to snap lots of photos
  • On a sunny day, take the photos in the shade using your flash
  • To get 6 or 7 good photos of my two kids, I took about 70 photos with my digital camera
